Passport Seva, run by the Ministry of External Affairs, processes every Indian passport application - fresh issues, renewals, and Police Clearance Certificates (PCC). After you submit your application at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK), a Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK), or an Indian Embassy/Consulate abroad, you receive a 15-character file number. Applications filed outside India are tracked automatically through the Global Passport Seva Portal (GPSP).
Passport Seva provides application-status tracking using the file number and applicant's date of birth. Applications handled at Indian missions have a separate official mission portal requesting an ARN or file number and date of birth. Application processing and physical dispatch are different stages: a postal reference, when issued, follows delivery rather than the passport decision. Police Verification
Where applicable, your local police station verifies your address and background. A clear report moves the file forward for granting.
Granted & Printed
Once granted, your passport enters the print queue at the central printing facility, is printed, and passes quality checks and lamination.
Dispatched via Speed Post
Your passport is handed over to India Post with a Speed Post tracking number, which you can also track on Track91 for door-to-door delivery updates.
Passport File Number Format
Your file number is printed on the acknowledgement receipt issued at the Passport Seva Kendra. It is a 15-character reference that starts with the domestic or supported overseas structure shown on the acknowledgement.

Applied at an Indian Embassy or Consulate Abroad?
Passport applications submitted outside India - at Indian Missions in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore, and 180+ other locations - are processed on the Global Passport Seva Portal (GPSP) instead of the domestic system. You don't need to do anything different: enter your file number and date of birth as usual, and Track91 automatically detects an overseas application and fetches its status from GPSP, including the Embassy/Consulate handling your file.

Which official portal should I use for an application filed abroad?
Use Passport Seva at Indian Embassies and Consulates for a mission application. Its tracker requests the ARN or file number and date of birth. Check the mission named on your receipt if the domestic portal does not return your application.
Where do I find my passport file number?
Your file number is printed on the acknowledgement letter or receipt issued after your appointment at the Passport Seva Kendra or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra. It is also sent to you by SMS and email from Passport Seva when your application is submitted.
Why is my date of birth required to track my passport application?

My passport has been dispatched. How do I track the delivery?
Once dispatched, your passport travels through India Post Speed Post. The dispatch status includes a Speed Post tracking number (for example, PP734291814IN) that you can track on Track91 under India Post for detailed door-to-door delivery updates.

What does "Police Verification" mean in my passport status?
Where applicable, your local police station verifies your address and background after the application is submitted. A clear report moves the file forward for granting. Until the report is submitted and accepted, the status stays at the police verification stage.
Can I track my passport application without a file number?
No. Passport Seva requires both the file number and the applicant's date of birth to return a status, so Track91 cannot look up an application without them. Check the acknowledgement receipt issued at the PSK or POPSK, or the SMS and email sent by Passport Seva.
