Official Passport Seva Application Status

Passport India Application Status Tracking

Passport Seva, run by the Ministry of External Affairs, processes every Indian passport application — fresh issues, renewals, and Police Clearance Certificates (PCC). After you submit your application at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK), a Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK), or an Indian Embassy/Consulate abroad, you receive a 15-character file number. Enter your file number and date of birth above to instantly check your live application status — from police verification and printing to dispatch through India Post Speed Post. Applications filed outside India are tracked automatically through the Global Passport Seva Portal (GPSP).

How Your Passport Application Progresses

Every passport application moves through a series of stages before the passport reaches your doorstep. Here is what each stage means when you track your file number.

Application Submitted

Your application, documents, and biometrics are captured at the PSK/POPSK and a file number is generated for tracking.

Police Verification

Where applicable, your local police station verifies your address and background. A clear report moves the file forward for granting.

Granted & Printed

Once granted, your passport enters the print queue at the central printing facility, is printed, and passes quality checks and lamination.

Dispatched via Speed Post

Your passport is handed over to India Post with a Speed Post tracking number, which you can also track on Track91 for door-to-door delivery updates.

Passport File Number Format

Your file number is printed on the acknowledgement receipt issued at the Passport Seva Kendra. It is a 15-character reference that starts with two letters identifying your Regional Passport Office, followed by 13 digits.

AH1234567890123 BO1234567890123

Along with the file number, Passport Seva requires the applicant's date of birth to look up the application status. Track91 asks for it once and uses it only for status lookups.

Applied at an Indian Embassy or Consulate Abroad?

Passport applications submitted outside India — at Indian Missions in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore, and 180+ other locations — are processed on the Global Passport Seva Portal (GPSP) instead of the domestic system. You don't need to do anything different: enter your file number and date of birth as usual, and Track91 automatically detects an overseas application and fetches its status from GPSP, including the Embassy/Consulate handling your file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common queries about Passport India tracking, delays, and deliveries.

Where do I find my passport file number?

Your file number is printed on the acknowledgement letter or receipt issued after your appointment at the Passport Seva Kendra or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra. It is also sent to you by SMS and email from Passport Seva when your application is submitted.

Why is my date of birth required to track my passport application?

The official Passport Seva status service verifies the file number against the applicant's date of birth before revealing the application status. Track91 sends it securely to Passport Seva for the lookup and does not share it with anyone else.

My passport has been dispatched. How do I track the delivery?

Once dispatched, your passport travels through India Post Speed Post. The dispatch status includes a Speed Post tracking number (for example, PP734291814IN) that you can track on Track91 under India Post for detailed door-to-door delivery updates.

Can I track a passport application submitted outside India?

Yes. Applications filed at an Indian Embassy or Consulate abroad are processed on the Global Passport Seva Portal (GPSP). Track91 detects overseas applications automatically and shows the same live status — including which Mission is handling your file — with no extra steps.

What does "The status of the entered File Number is not available" mean?

This usually means the file number or date of birth does not match Passport Seva records, or the application is too old and has been archived. Double-check both values against your acknowledgement receipt and try again.

How do I check my Passport India application status?

Enter your passport file number and the applicant's date of birth in the tracker above. Track91 fetches the live application status from Passport Seva instantly — covering police verification, granting, printing and dispatch — without any account, registration or login.

What does a passport file number look like?

A file number is a 15-character reference that starts with two letters identifying your Regional Passport Office, followed by 13 digits — for example AH1234567890123 or BO1234567890123. Applications filed abroad use the same format, such as SB1075936837826.

What does "Police Verification" mean in my passport status?

Where applicable, your local police station verifies your address and background after the application is submitted. A clear report moves the file forward for granting. Until the report is submitted and accepted, the status stays at the police verification stage.

Can I track my passport application without a file number?

No. Passport Seva requires both the file number and the applicant's date of birth to return a status, so Track91 cannot look up an application without them. Check the acknowledgement receipt issued at the PSK or POPSK, or the SMS and email sent by Passport Seva.

Is Track91 affiliated with Passport Seva?

No. Track91 is an independent status tracking tool and is not endorsed by or affiliated with Passport Seva, the Ministry of External Affairs, or the Government of India. For official updates, appointments, or grievances, please use the Passport Seva website.
