Tracking number vs order ID
Find the carrier reference for your parcel and avoid confusing it with a shopping order ID.

Tracking numbers and order IDs identify different things
An order ID identifies a purchase with a seller or marketplace. A tracking number identifies a shipment in a carrier’s system. Depending on the service, the shipment reference may be called an AWB, consignment number, parcel number, docket number or freight reference.
One order can be split into several shipments, each with its own tracking number. A shipment can also receive a separate reference when another carrier takes over. Use the reference supplied for the parcel or delivery stage you want to check.
Where to find your tracking number
- Online purchases: check the delivery details in your order, the dispatch email or the shipping notification.
- Parcels you sent: check the booking receipt, shipping label or confirmation from the carrier or booking agent.
- Business and freight shipments: ask the sender or logistics contact for the carrier name and the shipment reference used for tracking.
If you only have an order ID, ask the seller for the assigned carrier and tracking reference. Do not assume that a shop’s order number will work in a courier’s tracking form.
There is no single tracking-number format
References may contain digits, letters or both, and their length varies by carrier and service. Copy the full reference, including prefixes, suffixes and leading zeros. Do not add or remove characters simply to make it fit an example.
Different carriers can use similar formats. A number’s appearance may suggest a carrier, but it does not prove which company has the shipment or guarantee a tracking result. The carrier named on your receipt or dispatch message is the better starting point.
Choose the right carrier on Track91
Find the company in the courier directory, open its tracking page and check the supported reference formats. Coverage and lookup availability vary by carrier. If your reference is not supported or the integration is unavailable, use the carrier’s official tracking service.
If your parcel has been handed to a delivery partner, use the partner reference only when it is supplied by the sender or carrier. The original number may not work in every partner’s system.
If the number is missing or rejected
Check that you copied the shipment reference rather than a purchase, payment or booking-account identifier. Confirm the carrier and reference with the sender. If the details are correct but there is still no result, follow our tracking-not-updating guide to distinguish an unpublished record from a failed lookup.
Track91 cannot identify the correct shipment from a recipient’s name, phone number or address alone. Use the seller’s order support or the carrier’s official help channels to recover a missing reference.
