About United Cargo

United Cargo is the freight division of United Airlines, moving air freight in the holds of the airline's passenger and freighter network under the IATA airline prefix 016. It sells to freight forwarders rather than to consumers, so a shipment is identified by an air waybill rather than a parcel barcode. Its public tracker publishes the consignment's commodity, weight and piece count, every station movement in both local and Zulu time, and the booked flight itinerary with scheduled and actual times for each leg.

Air waybill freight

A master air waybill covers one consignment between two airport stations and is the identifier everything else hangs from. The record states the nature of the goods, the booked and chargeable weight, the volume and the piece count, which is how a forwarder confirms that the shipment being tracked is the one they tendered.

Multi-leg flight itineraries

Freight rarely flies non-stop. A consignment is usually booked onto two or more United flights through a connecting hub, and each leg carries its own schedule and actual times. A delay normally shows up as a gap between the scheduled and actual departure on one leg rather than as an explicit exception event.

Special handling

Consignments can carry special handling codes for dry ice, temperature control, live animals or dangerous goods, and the tracker publishes those alongside the commodity. They matter when reading a delay, because freight with handling restrictions can be held off a flight that an ordinary consignment would have made.

Destination handling

After the last flight arrives, the consignment is unloaded, the consignee is notified, documents are released and the freight is collected. Those are separate recorded steps, so a shipment that has landed is not yet available and a notified consignment is waiting for the consignee or their broker to act.

Finding your air waybill number

United air waybills start with the airline prefix 016 and continue with eight digits, written as 016-12345678, a generic illustration rather than a real consignment. The number is printed on the air waybill itself and supplied by the freight forwarder who made the booking. Entering the eleven digits without a hyphen works, because Track91 normalises the reference so one shipment is never stored twice. A waybill starting with a different three-digit prefix belongs to another airline and will not resolve here.

Expected transit times

Air freight transit is defined by the booked flights rather than by a service promise. Read the itinerary: the scheduled departure of the first leg and the scheduled arrival of the last give the planned door-to-airport time, and the actual times show what really happened. Freight is also commonly tendered hours before its flight and sits at the origin station until manifesting, which is why the gap between received-from-shipper and departed is often the longest part of the journey.

Reading United Cargo statuses

United files movements using the industry Cargo-IMP vocabulary. BKD is a confirmed booking, RCS freight received from the shipper, MAN manifested onto a specific flight, DEP departed and ARR arrived. RCF marks the freight being received off the aircraft, NFD the consignee being notified, AWD and AWR document handovers, and DLV delivery. Because paperwork is often filed after the goods move, the newest scan is not always the real status; Track91 follows the consignment summary United itself publishes, so a delivered shipment reads as delivered even when a later document scan exists.

Getting help with a United Cargo shipment

United Cargo contracts with freight forwarders, so the forwarder who booked the consignment is the right first contact and the party who can raise a trace or rebook a rolled shipment. For a consignment already at the destination station, the local United Cargo office handles collection and document release. Quote the air waybill number, the flight numbers on the itinerary and the newest movement. Track91 independently displays the published history and cannot rebook freight, release documents or settle a claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

Help with United Cargo tracking, delays and deliveries. Select a question to read the answer.

How do I track a United Cargo shipment?

Choose United Cargo on Track91 and enter the air waybill number with or without its hyphen. The timeline lists every station movement from booking to delivery, and the booked flight plan is shown alongside with its scheduled and actual times.

What format does a United Cargo air waybill use?

United air waybills begin with the airline prefix 016 followed by eight digits, for example 016-12345678. Entering the eleven digits without the hyphen works too, because the reference is normalised. A waybill starting with another prefix belongs to a different airline.

How long does a United Cargo shipment take?

There is no fixed transit time: it depends on the flights booked for the consignment. The itinerary shows each leg with its scheduled and actual departure and arrival, which is the accurate way to judge progress. Customs clearance and collection at the destination add further time.

Why is my United Cargo tracking not updating?

Movements are filed at handling milestones rather than continuously, so nothing appears while freight waits at an airport for its booked flight. A gap between manifesting and departure is normal, especially where a consignment is rolled onto a later service.

What do the United Cargo status codes mean?

United uses the industry Cargo-IMP codes: BKD is booking confirmed, RCS received from shipper, MAN manifested onto a flight, DEP departed, ARR arrived, RCF received from the flight, NFD consignee notified, AWD documents delivered and DLV delivered.

Can I track United Cargo without the air waybill number?

No. The air waybill number is required. It is on the paperwork issued when the shipment was booked and is normally supplied by the freight forwarder. Track91 cannot search by consignee name, address or telephone number, so ask the forwarder for the reference.

Why does my shipment show a document status after it was delivered?

Paperwork movements such as documents received or documents delivered are often filed hours after the freight itself changed hands. Track91 follows the consignment summary United publishes, so a delivered shipment still reads as delivered even when a later paperwork scan exists.

Is Track91 affiliated with United Cargo?

No. Track91 is an independent tracking service displaying published shipment events. United Cargo, the freight division of United Airlines, remains responsible for handling and customer enquiries. Contact United Cargo or your freight forwarder about collection, customs, claims and proof of delivery.
